Booking a first appointment with a psychiatrist is a big step, and it is normal to feel a little uncertain about what will happen. Knowing what to expect can make the visit feel much more manageable.
Before your visit
When you schedule, our team will ask for some basic information and your insurance details. It helps to jot down a few notes ahead of time:
- What brought you in, and when you first noticed it
- Any medications or supplements you currently take, with doses
- Past mental health treatment, if any
- Relevant family medical and mental health history
- Questions you want to ask
During the evaluation
Your first appointment is usually longer than follow-up visits. Your psychiatrist will talk with you about your symptoms, daily life, sleep, stress, relationships and overall health. There are no wrong answers. The goal is to understand your situation as clearly as possible.
By the end of the visit, your psychiatrist will share their initial impressions and discuss options with you. A plan may include therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, or a combination, and you will always have a say in the decisions.
After your first appointment
Most people return for follow-up visits to see how things are going and adjust the plan as needed. If telehealth is more convenient, many follow-up visits can be done through our telepsychiatry service.
